Functional Approach to Athletes Foot

Athlete’s foot, also known as tinea pedis, is caused by a fungus. It is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes, which thrive in warm, moist environments, such as sweaty shoes or locker room floors.

The infection often strikes in “athletes”, who tend to have sweaty feet stuck in tight-fitting shoes for long periods of time. However, the rash can affect non-athletes just as commonly – especially if you wear shoes all day and sweat. Athletes foot can also be spread from person-to-person via unwashed clothes, shared towels, and even contaminated floors.

What are the symptoms of athlete’s foot?

Symptoms of Athlete’s foot may include itching, burning, stinging, and peeling of the skin between the toes and on the soles of the feet. The affected skin may also become red, cracked, and blistered.

The fungus grows on the top layer of the skin, where it feeds on dead skin cells and causes irritation and inflammation and can worsen to impact deeper layers at a later stage.

In severe cases, the infection can spread to the toenails and cause thickening, discoloration, and crumbling. Sounds delightful right?

There are several risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing Athlete’s foot, such as:

> Walking barefoot in public areas such as locker rooms, swimming pools, and showers, gym floors
> Showering barefoot in public bathrooms
> Wearing tight-fitting shoes and / or socks that trap moisture and sweat
> Having sweaty feet for prolonged periods of time
> Not washing your feet or toes well.
> Having a weakened immune system
> Having a history of other fungal infections
> Having poor circulation or suffering from conditions such as diabetes or neuropathy

Conventional treatments for athletes’ foot

Conventional treatments for Athlete’s foot typically involve the use of antifungal creams, powders, or sprays. These medications work by killing the fungus or preventing its growth. Most of the time athlete’s foot isn’t very serious. You can treat mild cases at home by applying certain creams for several weeks. Mild athlete’s foot is usually treated with antifungal creams.

Functional approach to athletes’ foot

First and foremost, practicing good hygiene and protecting your feet from cracks or flaking can help prevent a fungal infection. It’s important to keep your feet dry since moisture can set the scene for the growth of bacteria or fungus.

> Use a clean towel before you put on clean socks and shoes.
> Do not share razors, towels, shoes or socks with other people
> Make sure to wash your socks in hot water with natural detergent to eradicate bacteria
> Let air reach your feet when you’re home
> Avoid wearing shoes that are too tight
> Alternative the shoes you wear if your prone to athletes’ foot
> When showering in a public place, wear flip flops

Holistic treatments for Athlete’s foot may include natural remedies such as tea tree oil, garlic, and apple cider vinegar. These substances have antifungal properties and may help to reduce inflammation and itching. You can create your own foot soak or moisturiser based on coconut oil with essential oils such as tea tree to create a natural anti-fungal.

A weakened immune system

A weakened immune system corresponds with a higher risk for fungal infections, as well as numerous other “common” illnesses. Although a compromised immune system is not always necessary to get Athlete’s foot.

Factors that can weaken your body’s ability to control the growth of fungus or other microbes include:

> A poor diet (high in sugar and processed foods)
> A sedentary lifestyle
> High amounts of stress
> Smoking, drug use or exposure to chemicals and pollution
> Having a health condition like an autoimmune disorder, diabetes or poor blood flow
> Using antibiotics or hormone replacement drugs often

Ozone therapy

Ozone therapy, which is widely known and applied in Europe and the US uses ozone gas to treat various health conditions, including fungal infections such as Athlete’s foot. Ozone therapy can be administered topically or internally to treat the infection.

Topical ozone therapy involves applying ozone gas directly to the affected area via bagging. The ozone gas reacts with the fungal cells, disrupting their structure and killing them.

Internal ozone therapy, on the other hand, involves administering ozone gas into the body through various methods, such as rectal insufflation or intravenous infusion. Internal ozone therapy has been shown to boost the immune system, increase antioxidant capacity, oxygenation and improve overall health, which will help to fight off the fungal infection.

Ozone therapy is considered a holistic treatment for Athlete’s foot, as it not only targets the symptoms but also addresses the underlying cause of the infection.

One study published in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine in 2018 investigated the use of ozone therapy for toenail fungus, which is often caused by the same fungi that cause Athlete’s foot. The study found that ozone therapy was effective in improving the appearance of the toenail and reducing the severity of the infection.

Another study published in the Journal of Hospital Infection in 2012 evaluated the use of ozone gas as a disinfectant for hospital surfaces contaminated with fungi. The study found that ozone gas effectively reduced the fungal load on contaminated surfaces, indicating its potential use in preventing the spread of fungal infections.

Ozone therapy is a promising alternative treatment for Athlete’s foot that can be used both topically and internally.
