Red light therapy can prevent degenerative changes in the brain and slow down the progress of traumatic brain injury, ischemic stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease as well as age related cognitive decline.
Red light and near infrared light benefits on brain health:
- Improves cognitive performance and memory
- Boosted and improved mitochondrial function of cells
- Improved cellular repair of damaged neurons
- Protective effect on neurons
- Decrease brain inflammation
The brain, among the muscles and heart have the greatest mitochondrial density. Mitochondria dysfunction, poor circulation and brain inflammation are very common in conditions such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, or Parkinson’s disease which explains the positive response to red and near infrared light therapy.
Neuroinflammation is a crucial pathophysiological finding in brain disorders which is why red/near infrared light can exude another benefit as it addresses the inflammatory pathways. It does this by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and increases anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Hi Deborah,
I am being treated by my optometrist with green light (bulb and green glasses) for my
diplopia (double vision) due to divergence insufficiency. Know about this stuff?
